Grammy gave me a safe space to grow. In the early 80's her apartment was a short walk away, dazzling white exterior in the blazing Florida sun, and a cozy dark comforting interior. Her new condo was so large and airy. I loved looking in her closet for the toys she kept for the grandkids, and the jar of pennies she kept for the girls' card night. That was the only night she would shoo us away. Her love of life, family, friends, food and games will always be with me. How many times did I try to hold a pinochle hand before mine were large enough? I hovered over family members' shoulders and counted points until I could join. Bingo! Weekends at Grammy's also promised Chinese food, Church, chores, and TV shows; a ritual she and I would enjoy together like clockwork. Family dinners and holidays were spent baking brownies or cakes, preparing meals, setting the table (with names!), and cleaning up with the family. She made sure we were provided with treats and delicious food. Grammy taught me to enjoy flying, and brought us to visit our aunt every summer. She taught us to dress the best for the occasion, comport ourselves, and be polite to everyone. Her dedication to the Church and prayer grew over time, and left an indelible impression. Much love, peace, and thanks to her.
