My mother might have looked dainty and delicate on the outside but had an inner strength hard to match. Some might have called it stubbornness or hard headedness at times (myself included), but it was none of that. It was an inner strength aimed at what she thought was right and just. And at that moment, her foot came down like no other, in an ever so gentle and unmovable way.
No matter where we went, my mom made a point of spending time outside and enjoying the sight of nature. Simple things like a bird flying by, a squirrel running from one tree to another, the feeling of the breeze on her face, or the warmth of the sunshine on her body, gave her great joy. My mother, just like my dad, had a great respect for nature and all living creatures.
I remember one time when a rogue horse was running away from its owner. It ran down the beach, to the house, onto the concrete porch, down the wrap-around hall just to end up in my mother’s embrace. She was in his path, she stood there calmly and when he, disturbed and agitated, got to her side she wrapped her arms around his neck and he stopped, like entranced, and stood there still as an afternoon after a pouring rain.
My mother had the ability to calm the most turbulent spirit and give it respite form its own fears. To receive her embrace was to dive into a peaceful pool of love, a pool of unconditional love and acceptance. Such was the power of her embrace.
She always chose to see the best in everyone and never spoke ill of anyone, even though we all have our obvious flaws.
My mother lived her life on her own terms. And just as she lived on her own terms so did she pass away. She chose to be among family; that was her wish. Family. Family was what was most important to her.
She had 11 children with her only love, her late husband George Jackson.
She is survived by her sister Elsie Wehmeier and brother Millard Underwood. Her 9 children Miguel Jackson, Diana Jackson, Luis Jackson, Paula Jackson, Daniel Jackson, Jose Jackson, Marivi Jackson, Pedro Jackson and Pablo Jackson. 19 Grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren.
Family is what is most important to her.
