Her big brother George was waiting for her. Veronica was proud of being a “tomboy” and loved to “hang turkey” so high up in a tree that none of the boys would follow her. To hang turkey you climb as high up as you dare, loop your knees over a tree branch and let your body and head hang upside down towards the earth. During her high school days, Veronica wondered if she might like to go to college. She decided to test the waters by taking a college prep course. When the teacher started using letters instead of numbers in the equations, she said “not for me.” She immediately switched to studying shorthand and typing which she loved. Upon graduating, Veronica applied and got a secretarial position at the Providence State House in the Department of Agriculture in the Office of Entomology - the study of bugs. Veronica maintained a lifelong passion for bugs and on the last days of her life daughter Dyanna and caregiving companion Steve read to her from the Big Book of Bugs. Veronica married in 1945 at the end of World War II. She moved to Fall River, Massachusetts with her husband Alfred and gave life to three bouncing babies, Adrienne Jamiel, Michael Jamiel and Dyanna Jamiel. Veronica’s children were and continued to be the loves of her life. Career Veronica worked at Jamiel‘s Furniture Store, the business she owned with her husband. She also owned and operated Vee’s Sportswear which got its start when she was invited by owner Sabina to carry cute outfits over her arm into Sabina’s Beauty Salon for the women under the hairdryers to examine. In 1963, Veronica made a career change and began working as a stenographer/secretary for the US Government in Newport Rhode Island at the Naval Underwater Systems Center. She always received five star performance reviews. And that’s even when, as she maintained, she never understood a single word of the engineer’s technical language when she was taking dictation. In her early 60s, Veronica followed her dream to move to Florida by transferring to work for the government in Fort Lauderdale. This is where she discovered many other life passions. Veronica‘s Passions Ballroom Dancing Veronica was so talented she was invited with her partner Scotty to give exhibition ballroom dances by different venues. Vienna waltz, tango, cha-cha, no dance was too complicated for her. Bowling Veronica spent many happy years with her bowling buddies competing on a team. If you remember her challenge to the boys about hanging turkey, you may imagine how much she liked to win. Bocce After Veronica retired from the bowling league, she went on to become a star Bocce player in the friendly weekly game she played with her neighbors. Each week she’d return home with another trophy which she proudly displayed on the windowsill of her front porch. Adventure Travel Veronica was passionate about seeing the world. She took her three young children to New Hampshire for a vacation where they went splunking through caves. With her traveling companion Ed, she traveled the United States in a camper. After she retired, she saw the world with her traveling companion Joe. Cruises to exciting locations and land tours in China and Russia and in a myriad of other countries. Pool Veronica continued to play pool at the Lauderdale West clubhouse until her 95th year. And more… Veronica was a mean Scrabble player. She loved to play the card game hi low jack with her New England family who were the only people who played this game. Up until her fading days at the beginning of September 2021, Veronica played dominoes and “Go Fish”. Veronica never lost her delight in having fun. Her favorite saying is “What will be, will be.” Her children remained Veronica’s greatest passion throughout her life.
