Obituary of Joseph A. Mitchell

Remembering A Life Well Lived Joseph “Sonny” Anthony Mitchell Mr. Joseph “Sonny” Anthony Mitchell, age 88, passed away on Friday, December 31, 2021, in Miami, Florida. Sonny was the ninth of 10 children born to the late Joseph Emanuel Mitchell and Maude Fraser on September 10, 1933, in Vincenne, St. David’s, Grenada. As a child, Sonny maintained a quiet and humble demeanor, and enjoyed working with his hands. Sonny moved to La Romaine, Trinidad as a young adult, where he lived for many years before moving to Christiansted, St. Croix. On February 25, 1960, his life would change forever when he married the love of his life, Adella Cecilia, who preceded him in death. Their union of more than 50 years produced two boys—RayAnthony Mitchell and John Mitchell and two girls— Barbara Odette Hazzard and Stacy Mitchell-Bruno. Sonny was a man of faith and a longtime member of the Holy Cross Catholic Church in Barren Spot, St. Croix, where he imparted Christian values to his children. He was a dedicated husband and father, who worked tirelessly to provide for his family through a successful career as a mason at numerous hotels on St Croix, St. Thomas, and St John. His role as a provider was unmatched, as he also worked as a taxi driver in St. Croix’s bustling tourism industry, transporting visitors around the island. When Sonny wasn’t working, he could be found gardening—an activity he enjoyed. Sonny was a reserved and proud man with a heart filled with love. He helped care for his mother and sisters and would often be the first to lend a helping hand to family, friends, and anyone in need. He is survived by his sister Doreen Regis; Children: Barbara Odette Hazzard, RayAnthony Mitchell, John Mitchell, Stacy Mitchell-Bruno; Grandchildren: Renee Hazzard, Randy Hazzard, Ryan Hazzard, Trisha Hazzard, Shamiah, Mitchell, Ray Mitchell, Brandon Mitchell, Sasha Mitchell-Wilson, Rohan Mitchell, Josiah Mitchell, Ev'Rick Bruno, Santavias Bruno; Great Grandchildren: Rayshawn Smith, Shadiyah Miller, Taylah Williams, Teyonah Williams, Jaelin Wilson, Sianna Wilson. Great-Great Grandchild: Sabrina Smith; and numerous Nieces and Nephews.
