Obituary of Lewis Carpenter
Please share a memory of Lewis to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Lewis A. Carpenter was born February 17, 1946 in Glensfalls New York. He went home to be with the Lord on October 28, 2015. Lewis is survived by his wife Elaine, his children Matthew, Daniel, and Sarah Carpenter and his daughter-in-law Thao Carpenter, his sisters Cookie Esworthy, Faith Sullo, and Debbie Terreros. Lewis also had two younger brothers that have already gone home to be with the Lord, Joe and Dwight Carpenter. Lewis has five grandchildren, Alyssa, Merlyn, Jade, Patience, and Dan-yellah and many nieces and nephews. They will all miss him dearly.
As a young boy Lewis lived on a farm in upper state New York. He and his sisters and brothers spent many days playing in the brook behind their farm house, climbing the mountain in order to reach an apple orchard and eat the apples, even if they were green. One day, in early spring, Lewis had the great idea to go in the garden and pull up all the young tender carrots for a snack. He convinced his younger sister and brothers to join him. And of course they did, how delicious tender young carrots taste. But, their dad did not think it was such a great idea and he let his children know. Needless to say, they never did that again.
When Lewis was ten his family moved to Miami, Florida where he spent the rest of his life. After high school Lewis joined the navy and served on a submarine. The navy gave him the opportunity to see the world. What an experience.
One day, when Lewis was a car salesman, a young beautiful girl named Elaine walked in to buy a car and it was love at first sight. He knew he had to sweep her off her feet and make her his bride. That was 35 years ago, and you know the rest of the story.
Many of Lewis' family and friends called him Big Lew. Why, because he was a big guy with an even bigger heart. Lewis loved to spend time with his family, and his grandchildren were the light of his life. One day, when Big Lew was at the Home Show with his family he saw an interactive display/demonstration for hurricane windows. The salesman was encouraging people to take a large sledge hammer and swing as hard as they could in order to break the window. Of course not one could, no matter how hard they swung the hammer. Then up walked Big Lew. With only one small single handed swing he shattered the window putting the salesman out of business.
As many of you know, Lewis was sick for many years. He fought a good battle and was with us much longer than anyone thought. But his mansion in heaven was ready and God called him home. We know he is safe, healthy, and happy and for that we are grateful. He will be missed, but our memories will help us through the difficult days ahead.
