Daniel J. Horgan, Sr., age 87, passed away on Sunday, October 6, 2024, in Pembroke Pines, FL. Born on December 5, 1936, in Brooklyn, New York, Daniel was the proud son of Irish immigrants.
A dedicated public servant, Daniel enlisted in the United States Air Force at 17, serving four years, primarily stationed in Germany. Upon completing his military service, he returned to his family in Miami and began a distinguished career with the Dade County Sheriff's Office in 1958. As a young Deputy, he was a founding member of the agency's first Honor Guard Unit and demonstrated exceptional commitment throughout his 25 years of service in various roles, including the Seaport, General Investigations, and the Robbery Unit. He rose through the ranks to become Sergeant, Lieutenant, and ultimately the Bureau Commander of Court Services.
In 1983, Daniel was appointed as the United States Marshal for the Southern District of Florida, a role he held for 15 years. His initial appointment by President Ronald Reagan was followed by reappointments from Presidents George H.W. Bush and Bill Clinton, reflecting his exemplary service and leadership in law enforcement. Over his 40-year career, Daniel made significant contributions to the South Florida community and left an enduring legacy of integrity and dedication.
After retiring, he relocated to Cocoa Beach, where he cherished time spent with family and enjoyed watching NASA rocket launches and fireworks from his balcony. Daniel was predeceased by his beloved wife of 59 years, Marta Horgan. He is survived by his sons, Daniel (Michele), James, and Kenneth (Teri); his grandchildren, Kristen, Daniel IV, Brooke, Dylan, Michael, Danielle, Amanda, and Gabriella; and great-grandchildren Kylo, Gaia, and Emry.
Burial services will be held at South Florida National Cemetery at a date and time to be determined. Daniel's commitment to law enforcement and his loving family will be remembered by all who knew him.
